Overview

Texas Instruments is giving away 10 copies of Fundamentals of Power Supply Design book. Fundamentals of Power Supply Design draws upon decades of experience from Texas Instruments’ Power-Systems experts. It is written by Bob Mammano, a pioneer in the power supply industry and recognized as “the Father” of the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller. The book starts out with power supply basics such as voltage regulation and power component selection, and then addresses advanced topics such as magnetics design, minimizing EMI, and topology selection. The book is a readable resource that contains equations and theories but also chronicles the history of the power supply industry. Actual measurements are also used throughout to illustrate practical example circuits. This book will be your key reference guide whether you are a new or seasoned power engineer.

    I have worked on couple designs involving power supply design. One example is a custom Raspberry Pi Docker cluster.  I will need to design the USB power circuits to power 12 Raspberry Pi 3 models. I was struggling to find all the information I need to finish the design and had couple detours. With this book and online workbook I can imaging things could have become much smoother.

    My preferred method of learning about power supply design topics would be Books as well as the Training Videos as both of them could be very hand in one way or the other. This I have come to realize that the book has its place which the other technology can not be a substitute.  This we see when the videos in this case may fail when the machine has been attacked be malware which is common these days because of Internet of things. Videos are also very important when it comes to the illustration because you get to see things in real time, which the books can not do. To both technologies are welcome.
    I would like to use the Fundamentals of Design Power Supply to learn to design power supplies of laptops as well as industrial power supplies, personal I have desire to learn but have always found it hard to get thing together . This will be an opportunity to learn all there is to get started to the point of seeing a working product, even to take it to the market
    (3) I would like to believe that i would definitely be in a position to solve a lot of online workbook problems from Fundamentals of Power Supply Design. This I believe as the writer has a lot of experience in this field of power supply design and he is wiling to share that information.

    A primer with minimum components, the calculations involved with a part list, like Mouse part#‘s etc. Then getting to more complex designs , higher frequencies etc…
    Here my thoughts:
    There is a lot of schematics etc on the web. But, when it comes to the basics, it’s difficult to find a - let say - capacitor with low ESR…. what does it mean - “LOW” ?
    And, please - don’t skip any steps….. and explain each step…

    P.S. I build a SPS before, very simple…. I use it to drop the supply voltage low enough to run a linear regulator with a little heat sink.

    1) I like learning about design topics generally from books, e-books or videos online. I find it more convenient when problems or methodologies are broken down step by step in videos. However, theory is easier to communicate via a book.

    2) I will use this book as a primer on power supply design and as a future reference.

    3) An online workbook of problems would be a great supplement to materials covered in the book.

    1. Generally I used to go with books as it provides the all required information from basic to advanced level for designing. For robust, reliable design of power supply, one need to have a basic theoretical knowledge and mathematical calculations for their power supply and this kind of information is available in specific books. Some times I use the white papers or design notes from the reputed firms whenever I have to troubleshoot any circuit and I will be very helpful to troubleshoot.
    2. Here, I would like to go with the overall power supply primer as it provides the whole information related to power supply.

    My preferred method of learning power supply design is by books, E-books, training videos, and articles/ white papers.  All are good ways of learning and I use all of them when I need to learn about a subject such as power supplies.  I plan to use “Fundamentals of Power Supply Design to increase my ability to service switch mode power supplies and linear power supplies.  I feel that you learn the best by working problems associated with the subject that you are studying.  I think that an online workbook of problems to solve from Fundamentals of Power Supply Design would be useful.

    1- I think a hard paper book would be most useful because I would always have that book at my disposal to refer to. Hard books can also be scanned and written in. It is easier, most of the time, to put tabs in a book to make quick reads and look-ups.

    2- I plan to use Fundamentals of Power Supply Design for my education as I pursue my B.S. in electrical engineering.  I have also performed line work for utility companies and i am a current electrician, having this material would allow me to further ensure that my troubleshooting/problem solving skills are safe and fluent.

    3- I would indeed find a online workbook useful. I have taken many online courses and find navigation on a computer or other device effectively easy. It also means having the book on planes or at work/school which is so versatile.

    My preferred method of learning is through books, videos, and in person training. Through books and videos, I feel the information is thuroughly explained, and then an example is given. In which the example can be take, applied, and tweaked to further understanding of the subject. With in person training, I feel that the material is presented, but then there is less of a limit of what information is given, as you can ask any questions you have and create a greater understanding
    With Fundamentals of Power Supply Design, I intend to use the book as a training module, learning the information presented within it, to later apply to projects. Of course, I intend to learn all I can from the book initially, but one cannot be expected to retain all information presented, such, I would later use the book throughout my projects or ideas.
    I find online workbooks exceptionally helpful in learning material. In doing this, it gives you and understanding of what you know, as well as what you should know by that point. In addition, due to changing of wording, or examples, many workbook problems often show different methods of using the material you already know, such as simply applying it in a different way. Due to the reasons listed, I find that more times than not, workbooks or problems are extremely useful and would be pleased to have one from Fundamentals of Power Supply Design.
    Thank you in advance for considering my application, if I am choosen, as a young highschool student, I look forward to all the applications and learning that of which would ensure. Thank you!
