The Array of Sensors that are Shaping Smart Cities and Smart Homes

December 06, 2017 by onsemi Download PDF

If you were to fall asleep for 50 years, upon awakening would you recognize the homes and cities in which people live? I imagine it's not too far-fetched to think of these futuristic homes and cities as being a hybrid between the fictional town of Hill Valley, CA, in the year 2015, as portrayed in the movie Back to the Future Part II, and Washington D.C., in the year 2054, as depicted in the Minority Report. What I'm referring to, specifically, is the automatically customized environments, settings, and advertisements based on each individual person as a function of the time of day, the day of the week, and the person's physical condition and mood.

Creating such a world is, in broad terms, actually rather simple. All that is needed for this recipe are two primary ingredients: (1) massive data crunching/computing power—and we have a great start via the cloud, and (2) sensors for acquiring the data. ON Semiconductor offers a host of sensors, ranging from Smart Passive Sensors (SPS), also known as battery-free wireless sensors, ambient light sensors (ALS), passive infrared (PIR) sensors, capacitive touch sensors, and image sensors.
