The IoT’s Low-Power Revolution

Interconnectivity in itself takes power, particularly for high-performance IoT devices that dedicate significant power usage to establishing connections and transmitting data. The IoT’s touted automatic firmware updates for security and performance optimization also utilize power, especially for devices with always-on functionality. Security and encryption can also increase device power needs.

Multiply these factors across billions of IoT devices—and combine them with resultant big data energy costs—and you have an extremely power-hungry network of electronics.

This series of articles touches on the various ways the IoT has demanded innovations in lowering power consumption, including decreasing power demands and increasing efficiencies.
