This episode of Tech Specs is part of a video series highlighting the features, applications, and technical specs of newly-released products.

AVX Low Clamp Automotive TransGuard Varistors

For varistors protecting sensitive circuits, a low clamping to working voltage ratio is needed to keep ICs from getting smoked. AVX Low Clamping Automotive Transguard Multilayer Varistors provide a lower ratio than standard varistors, with a 16 volt DC working voltage and a 35-volt clamping voltage, and they provide performance suitable for automotive, industrial, and other demanding applications.

Varistors are available with case sizes 0603 to 1210 and offer bidirectional protection for peak current up to 500 amps. In the off state, the varistors have very low leakage current, helping to maximize efficiency, and they also provide broadband EMI filtering due to the capacitance of the multilayer construction.

The parts are AEC-Q200 qualified and can operate at up to 125 degrees Celsius.

  • Working/Clamping Voltages: VW = 16Vdc, VC = 35Vdc
  • Low clamping to working voltage ratio protects sensitive circuits
  • Case sizes 0603 to 1210
  • Peak current: up to 500A
  • EMI/RFI attenuation due to the capacitive nature of multilayer construction
  • AEC-Q200 qualified and rated for -55°C to +125°C operating temperature
