Intel’s Optane SSD DC P4800X series is the most responsive SSD for use in the data center, and it creates a new storage tier that exists between DRAM and NAND SSDs. This allows the P4800X to expand the system memory capacity and work alongside DRAM, or to displace DRAM and lower the total system cost. In either case, this is transparent to the OS, with Intel’s software managing data location between DRAM and the P4800X.
The drive is a 375GB PCIe SSD that supports the PCIe 3.0 x4 and NVMe interfaces. Unlike typical SSDs, even data center SSDs, it uses 3D XPoint as its storage media, rather than NAND.
NAND SSDs have to perform various media management tasks, such as garbage collection, to keep the drive operating at its top performance. This is because NAND can’t simply be overwritten; it has to be erased, then written. Under heavy random write workloads, a NAND SSD’s latency can increase significantly while it performs this background media management. But the P4800X performance isn’t affected by these same random write workloads because the 3D XPoint media doesn’t require those same management tasks to be performed. In fact, while the P4800X exhibits a typical latency of less than 10 µs, it keeps read latency under 30 µs even under 2 GB/s of random write pressure.
The P4800X also exhibits exceptional throughput, reaching up to 550k IOPS. And this number doesn’t change much under low queue depth workloads. Where most drives showcase performance with a queue depth of 32 or 128, at a queue depth of 11, the P4800X can still hit 500k IOPS.
The low latency and high throughput translate into a consistently high quality of service that is 60 times better than NAND-based SSDs, making the P4800X ideal for critical, low latency applications.
The P4800X provides high performance under write-intensive workloads, and it has the endurance to withstand these workloads for a long time, as it’s rated for 30 drive writes per day and 12.3 petabytes written.
