Panasonic SD and eMMC Storage Media

Panasonic’s broad portfolio of SD and eMMC storage media offers fixed and removable storage solutions able to address a wide range of durability, capacity, and use-case requirements.

The family consists of SD, microSD, and eMMC offerings designed for consumer and industrial applications, with consumer products rated for -25°C to +85°C, and industrial products for -40°C to +85°C. They’re built with SLC, SLC-Lite, MLC, and TLC NAND, with capacities from 512MB to 256GB and speed grades up to UHS-II U3.

SLC, MLC, and TLC respectively offer 1 bit, 2 bits, and 3 bits per cell, with the higher bits per cell accomplished by splitting the threshold voltage range into more states. More bits per cell lowers cost, but also reduces reliability and write endurance, or the number of times a cell can be written to. This allows designers to optimize for cost and endurance based on application requirements.

A fourth option, SLC-Lite, uses MLC NAND that is treated as SLC by the controller. This results in 10 times the endurance and higher reliability than MLC at a lower cost than SLC. SLC and SLC-Lite are ideal for write-intensive applications, such as data logging, while MLC and TLC provide a lower cost option that is suitable for many applications.

Panasonic’s SD and microSD card offering include Consumer devices, which are TLC-based for the lowest cost, with capacities up to 64GB; Consumer plus devices using SLC-Lite and MLC for higher write endurance, with options up to 256GB and with read speeds up to 280MB/s and write speeds up to 90MB/s; and Industrial products, with an extended temperature range and SLC flash available for up to 60,000 write cycles.

Where SD and microSD cards are commonly used for removable storage, eMMC is soldered to the PCB. This protects it against loss of contact due to shock or vibration and because it’s non-removable it provides a higher level of security and data integrity. Panasonic’s MC series eMMC products are AEC-Q100 compliant. They’re available in capacities up to 32GB with 280MB/s read and 45 MB/s write speeds.
