This New Product Brief (NPB) is part of a video series highlighting the features, applications, and technical specs of newly-released products.

Renesas Electronics RL78/G23 MCU + Fast Prototyping Board

Renesas Electronics’ new RL78/G23 Low-Power, 16-bit, general-purpose microcontrollers are compatible with Renesas’s current general-purpose RL78 MCUs and are ideal for low power, cost-efficient applications such as IoT.

The RL78/G23A feature an increased on-chip flash memory of 768 kilobytes and 48 kilobytes of SRAM.

This MCU offers extremely low power consumption through a STOP mode with 210 nanoamps of current, a SNOOZE mode sequencer that makes it unnecessary to activate the CPU while peripherals are in SNOOZE mode, and a logic and event link controller that makes it possible to create conditional links.

The RL78/G23A includes substantially expanded on-chip peripheral functions and security features such as a capacitive touch sensor for a contactless gesture-based user-interface and a true random number generator essential for encryption.
