Most recently Peter was senior director of DC power at ChargePoint developing power conversion solutions for ultra-high speed EV charging. He holds a BEng Hons Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK.

Reduce the Complexity of Heavy Vehicle Traction Inverters

Traction inverters for electric buses, trucks, and agricultural and other special purpose vehicles carry the same development challenges as passenger EVs.  The traction inverter must meet functional safety standards and possess ASIL certification.

In this presentation, Peter Vaughan from PI will review SCALE™ EV, the industry’s only automotive-qualified and ASIL-certified plug-and-play gate drive solution with reinforced isolation. Designed for standard 1200 V automotive power modules this approach provides a fast, low-risk development path. The excellent performance of the driver will be demonstrated, showing how the feature-set lowers switching losses, provides protection for the power devices under all conditions, and integrates safety features such as active discharge and active short-circuit that simplify the overall system.

Traction inverters commonly require an emergency power supply to prevent hazards in the event of a fault in the 12 V or 24 V vehicle system bus.  To address this requirement, Vaughan will also discuss an isolated 30 VDC to 1000 VDC input power supply solution using an InnoSwitch™3-AQ device with FluxLink™ reinforced isolation and a 1700 V rating.  The unique integrated FluxLink reinforced isolated feedback provides a dramatic reduction in component count as well as PCB board area and enables further system simplification by eliminating downstream DC-DC converters.
