The R&S SMATE provides an entirely digital baseband section for generating I/Q signals and an RF section with I/Q modulator. The instrument uses I/Q (vector) modulation. Digital data streams are converted to an I/Q baseband signal. The baseband signal is then D/A-converted and modulated onto the target RF carrier frequency with the aid of an I/Q modulator.
