Matter is a home automation connectivity standard designed to reduce fragmentation across IoT device vendors and enable interoperability among smart home platforms from different providers. As an application-layer protocol, Matter runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread, and uses Bluetooth® Low Energy for commissioning.

By leveraging existing IP technologies, including Wi-Fi and Thread, Matter creates a unified wireless connectivity ecosystem for smart homes. This IP-based networking approach simplifies development for manufacturers while improving device compatibility for consumers.
