White Paper Overview

Conventional on-board chargers typically rely on multiple conversion stages and numerous passive components. This white paper presents an alternative 11 kW matrix converter design that combines AC/DC conversion, power-flow control, and galvanic isolation within a single stage.

Through an interview with the design engineer, the paper examines the Matrix-DAB topology, smart-capacitor filtering, advanced FPGA- and processor-based control, and compatibility with both three-phase European charging and single-phase North American standards. It also covers design improvements that increased power density to 2.4 kW/L and peak efficiency to 97.2%, including optimized component placement and top-cooled EliteSiC MOSFETs.

Go inside the design to understand how the matrix topology increases power density and supports multiple regional charging standards.
