Renesas Unwraps MCU for Single-Motor Control in Power Tools and More
Built on the Arm Cortex-M23 core, the new MCU family delivers precise, low-power motor control with built-in safety and diagnostic features.
Renesas recently released its RA2T1 microcontroller group built on a 64-MHz Arm Cortex-M23 core for single-motor applications. Thanks to its built-in analog features, such as the ability to measure all three motor phases at once, the RA2T1 delivers precise motor control. It also includes critical safety functions and works with Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP), making it easier for engineers to develop efficient, reliable motor-driven products across everything from vacuums and fans to drills and small appliances.

In cost-sensitive applications like fans, vacuums, and cordless power tools, motor control precision often comes at the cost of complexity or higher system resources. Manufacturers need embedded solutions that balance performance, power, and cost without adding complexity. That’s where Renesas’ latest entry (datasheet linked) to its RA microcontroller family steps in.
Purpose-Built for Motor Control Efficiency
Unlike many general-purpose MCUs that need added components or custom firmware for motor control, the RA2T’s 12-bit ADC includes three built-in sample-and-hold channels, allowing it to capture all three motor phase currents at the same time. This provides precise control even when switching speeds ramp up.
Complementary PWM features and integrated dead-time insertion help engineers implement inverter drives more easily, which is essential in applications like hair dryers, fans, or home appliances where motor speed and safety must be carefully managed. With built-in safety mechanisms, such as high-speed comparators and PWM shutdown functions, the system can quickly react to overcurrent conditions without adding external circuitry. Renesas claims these protections make the RA2T1 not only efficient but reliable for volume-driven consumer and industrial devices.
Compact, Low Power, and Scalable
Despite its motor-focused feature set, the RA2T1 doesn’t demand much in terms of power or board space. Operating at voltages as low as 1.6 V and offered in packages as small as 4 mm x 4 mm, the family may be useful for compact, battery-powered tools and appliances. Engineers can take advantage of up to 64 KB of flash and 8 KB of SRAM, along with flexible I/O support including SPI, I2C, and SCI interfaces. With options for 24- to 48-pin QFN and LQFP packages, the device scales easily across multiple design tiers.

Power management also gets a boost from on-chip oscillators, low-power modes, and fine-grained clock control. These features support energy-efficient operation in devices that may spend most of their time idle but require rapid motor spin-up under load.
