This episode of Tech Specs is part of a video series highlighting the features, applications, and technical specs of newly-released products.

Panasonic Grid Eye Sensor

Panasonic’s AMG88 series of Grid-EYE Infrared Array Sensors features an 8x8 array of thermopile elements that detect infrared radiation and measure absolute temperature and temperature gradients.

This allows you to detect multiple moving or stationary objects, identify their position in the room, and determine their direction of movement, providing more detailed room information without the privacy concerns of a camera.

The sensors have an I2C interface that outputs the array data at 1 or 10 frames per second and an integrated silicon lens with a 60° field of view.

The AMG88 series Grid-EYE is designed for use in smart appliances, energy-saving systems, digital signage, and automatic doors, with high-gain and low-gain variants providing different temperature measurement ranges and accuracy levels.

  • 8x8 thermopile array for two-dimension temperature detection
  • Detect multiple stationary and/or moving objects
  • Determine movement direction and position
  • I2C interface outputs temperature measurements at 1 or 10 frames per second
  • Field of view: 60°
  • Measurement range: 0°C to 80°C, ±2.5°C (high gain), -20°C to 100°C, ±3.0°C (low gain)
