Renesas’ RAA227063 is a smart gate driver IC for 3-phase Brushless DC motor applications. It can drive a variety of motor configurations and motor control algorithms without requiring hardware changes.
It integrates three half-bridge smart gate drivers and is capable of driving up to three N-channel MOSFET bridges with bridge voltages from 4.5 to 60 Volts. Each gate driver supports up to 1 Amp source and 2 Amp sink peak drive currents with programmable slew rate control and offers integrated 500 milliAmp buck-boost switching regulator to provide programmable gate drive 5 to 15 Volts.
The programmable RAA227063 allows designers to optimize the inverter power stage for different power levels by simply modifying the MOSFET and adjusting the slew rate, dead time, and gate drive with software. The gate driver supports 8 adjustable drive strengths through a hardware interface and 16 adjustable levels of drive strength through SPI interface.
Adjustable and adaptive dead-times are implemented to ensure robustness and flexibility. The active gate holding mechanism prevents a Miller effect-induced cross-conduction and further enhances performance. The RAA227063 has extensive fault protection functions and back-EMF sensing for BLDC sensor-less operation.
The Renesas RAA227063 can be used in conjunction with the Renesas RA6T2 microcontroller (or designer’s MCU of choice) to meet the changing needs of BLDC motor applications. The combination of these devices saves space, lowers BOM cost, and allows for easy tuning for applications that include e-bikes, home appliances, power tools and robotic motor drives.
