Keysight Introduces Physical Layer Compliance Test Solution for HDMI Links

A fully automated compliance suite tackles the complexities of HDMI 2.2 fixed-rate signaling, ultra-high bandwidth, and jitter sensitivity using Keysight's real-time scopes, intelligent software, and automated probing infrastructure.

As consumer devices push toward 8K resolution, deep color, and high frame rates, HDMI links must handle dramatically more data at tighter tolerances. HDMI 2.2 introduces Fixed Rate Link (FRL) signaling and higher symbol rates, increasing both test burden and failure risk across the transmitter physical layer. 

To ease the pressure on its adoption, Keysight Technologies has introduced a comprehensive solution that offers an automated, standards-aligned, and reproducible physical-layer compliance test system built to validate HDMI 1.4 through 2.2 links with minimal manual intervention.

Keysight's N5992HPCD CAT4 Cable Eye Test Software is a test environment for validating CAT4 cables against the HDMI 2.2 cable test specification's electrical performance requirements. 
 

At its core, the platform integrates Infiniium UXR-, V-, and Z-series real-time oscilloscopes, HDMI-specific D9020HDMC software, precision TP2 test adapters, and a fully programmable switch matrix with active probing support. Designed for both product development and certification contexts, the system enables full characterization of HDMI sources, direct-attach devices (DADs), and cable assemblies.

 

Why HDMI 2.2 Is Harder to Test

Previous HDMI versions enabled more generous jitter, rise-time, and eye-mask tolerances. HDMI 2.2 shifts to FRL, a fixed-rate transmission scheme that pushes symbol rates well beyond 6 Gbps per lane while maintaining legacy compatibility modes. Unlike TMDS, FRL can include up to four data lanes operating simultaneously, requiring high-fidelity differential probing at TP2 (Test Point 2) or TP3, depending on DUT packaging and topology.

Compounding the difficulty is the fact that FRL operates over single-ended connections internally, but transitions to differential signaling across the link, leading to hybrid noise modes, challenging impedance discontinuities, and tougher compliance requirements around jitter tolerance, signal swing, overshoot, and intra-pair skew. Test points must be probed precisely and under correct load and termination conditions to avoid masking errors or mischaracterizing compliance failures.

Keysight’s solution includes calibrated fixtures and adaptive probe control logic to ensure the oscilloscope sees a true representation of what a compliant HDMI sink would receive, particularly important in multi-lane FRL environments. By automating negotiation with the source via EDID and SCDC controller emulation, the system guarantees that link training operates as it would in the field.

 

Test Automation and Certification Readiness

The system does far more than execute test scripts. It includes guided workflows and interactive measurement results that support root-cause analysis for failures. Users can zoom in on waveforms, correlate physical layer timing issues to VIC/FRL training behavior, and analyze spectral components of jitter or noise across lanes.

The D9021HDMC is an electrical performance, validation, and compliance test software for HDMI transmitters. 
 

This is critical for HDMI 2.2, where failures often stem from marginal link training or subtle impedance mismatches that don’t show up in functional testing. The Keysight suite helps identify not just whether a device passes, but why it might be operating at the edge of specification.

Beyond debug, the full solution is standards-compliant and suited for pre-certification or formal test house submission, meaning developers can complete internal validation before sending devices for CTS testing.

As HDMI continues to evolve to meet 8K, HDR, and higher frame rate demands, test tools must evolve in parallel. Keysight’s HDMI 2.2 physical layer compliance suite brings measurement clarity to an increasingly challenging signal environment, especially for ultra-high resolution applications.
