MAXIM INTEGRATED TMC5160A Motor Controller & Driver ICs

Trinamic’s TMC5160 Motor Controller and Driver ICs provide a complete high-power stepper motor controller and driver solution that simplifies implementation while also deliver best-in-class performance for a wide range of industrial, medical, and commercial applications.

The TMC5160 is compact solution capable of driving 2-phase stepper motors with up to 20A coil current using external MOSFETs, with support for motor voltages from 8VDC to 60VDC.  They can be easily controlled using a SPI or Single Wire UART interface.  Package options include a 7mm x 7mm TQFP-48 or an 8mm x 8mm QFN-56, and they require minimal external components to complete the design, resulting in a small total footprint.

The TMC5160 incorporates multiple Trinamic proprietary technologies to deliver the combination of noiseless operation, excellent performance, and simple implementation.  StealthChop2 and spreadCycle choppers ensure noiseless operation while also maximizing efficiency and motor torque.  StallGuard2 can detect stalls and provides high precision sensorless motor load detection, while dcStep provides load dependent speed control and CoolStep automatically optimizes performance based on load for up to 75% energy savings.

The motion controller with SixPoint Ramp technology uses many of these technologies to calculate the optimum motion profile and uses different ramp settings for acceleration and deceleration.  The controller is capable of 256 microsteps per full step, and it has a full set of protection and diagnostic functions to prevent damage and assist with debugging.  To learn more about how Trinamic’s TMC5160 enables simple implementation while delivering best-in-class performance, visit Mouser.com
